If you’ve been looking into aesthetic treatments, chances are you’ve come across both Profhilo® and dermal fillers. And if you’re confused about the difference between the two — you’re not alone. It’s one of the questions I get asked most often during consultations.
Both treatments involve an injectable. Both can make a real difference to how your skin looks and feels. But they do very different things, and choosing the wrong one won’t get you the results you’re after.
So let’s clear it up properly.
First — Why Do We Even Need These Treatments?
As we get older, the skin gradually loses two things: collagen and hyaluronic acid. Collagen keeps the skin firm and structured. Hyaluronic acid keeps it hydrated, plump, and soft. From your mid-to-late twenties, production of both starts to slow down.
The result? Fine lines, loss of volume, skin that looks tired even when you’re not, and a general flatness to the face that wasn’t there before.
Both Profhilo® and dermal fillers work with hyaluronic acid — but that’s where the similarity ends.
What is Profhilo®?
Profhilo® is a skin booster, not a filler. This is the most important distinction to understand.
It’s made from one of the highest concentrations of pure hyaluronic acid available in any injectable product on the market. When injected into the skin, it doesn’t sit in one place or add volume to a specific area. Instead, it spreads beneath the surface — what’s known as bio-remodelling — and stimulates the skin to produce its own collagen and elastin.
Think of it less as a cosmetic treatment and more as a deep repair job for the skin itself.
The treatment involves five precise injection points on each side of the face. It takes around 20 to 30 minutes. There’s minimal downtime — maybe some small bumps at the injection sites for a few hours, but nothing that would stop you going about your day.
Results build gradually over four to six weeks as the collagen stimulation kicks in. Most clients do an initial course of two sessions, four weeks apart, and then maintain with a single session every six months or so.
What you’ll notice: Skin that looks and feels more hydrated. Better texture. Improved firmness. A healthy glow that people notice without being able to put their finger on exactly why.
What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are also made from hyaluronic acid, but they’re formulated differently. They’re thicker, more structured gels that are designed to add volume, definition, and shape to specific areas of the face.
Where Profhilo® works on the quality of the skin as a whole, fillers work on the structure underneath it.
Common areas include:
- Cheeks — restoring volume that’s been lost, lifting the midface
- Jawline — adding definition and structure
- Chin — improving proportion and balance
- Lips — enhancing shape, volume, and symmetry
- Nasolabial folds — softening the lines from the nose to the mouth
The results are immediate. You can see the difference as soon as the treatment is done, though some mild swelling in the first 24 to 48 hours is normal. Results typically last anywhere from 12 to 18 months depending on the area treated, the product used, and how your body metabolises it.
Fillers require a proper understanding of facial anatomy. Placed correctly, they look completely natural — enhancing your features without changing who you are. Placed incorrectly, they can look overdone or unbalanced. This is exactly why the practitioner you choose matters enormously.
So What’s the Actual Difference?
Here’s a simple way to think about it:
Profhilo® treats the skin. Dermal fillers treat the structure.
Profhilo® won’t add volume to your cheeks or define your jawline. Fillers won’t improve your skin texture or stimulate collagen production.
| Profhilo® | Dermal Fillers | |
| Purpose | Skin quality & hydration | Volume & structure |
| Results | Gradual (4–6 weeks) | Immediate |
| Areas | Whole face | Specific areas |
| Downtime | Minimal | Minimal |
| Longevity | 6 months (maintenance) | 12–18 months |
| Best for | Dull, dehydrated, ageing skin | Lost volume, lack of definitio |
Which One Do You Actually Need?
This is where a proper consultation makes all the difference — because the answer isn’t the same for everyone.
You might benefit more from Profhilo® if:
- Your skin looks dull, tired, or dehydrated
- You’ve noticed your skin texture has changed — it feels less smooth, less firm
- You want a natural improvement in overall skin quality rather than a specific change to a feature
- You’re in your late twenties or thirties and want to get ahead of volume loss before it becomes noticeable
- You’ve had fillers before and you’re happy with your structure, but your skin still looks flat
Dermal fillers might be the better option if:
- You’ve lost volume in your cheeks and your face looks hollower than it used to
- You want more definition along your jawline or chin
- Your lips have thinned over time and you’d like them restored
- You have a specific feature you’d like to balance or enhance
And sometimes — both.
This is actually quite common. A client might have great bone structure but skin that needs refreshing. Or they might want to improve skin quality and add a little cheek volume at the same time. The two treatments complement each other well, and combining them is often the most complete approach.
A Word on Choosing the Right Practitioner
Whether you go for Profhilo®, fillers, or both — the person administering the treatment matters more than the product itself.
Both treatments involve injectable techniques that require proper training, an understanding of facial anatomy, and a careful eye for proportion and balance. The goal is never to make someone look like they’ve had work done. It’s to make them look like themselves — just better rested, more defined, more confident.
At Amorim Aesthetics Clinic, every treatment begins with a thorough consultation and skin analysis. There’s no standard approach applied to everyone. What works for one face won’t necessarily work for another, and part of my job is helping you understand which treatment will actually get you the result you’re looking for — and being honest when something isn’t the right fit.
